"Uh..." Kaige was clearly at a loss for words. He was highly confused. Who was this girl and where exactly did she come from? More importantly, how did she find his house way out in the middle of nowhere? He then thought back to Salena, who was still in the kitchen. How would she react if she saw this girl standing at his door? Would she think she was some fling of his, or would she assume she was just some stranger? Now was one of those times he wished he could use his power to see into the future just so he would know how things would turn out. He didn't want to deal with a huge argument this early into his recovery. "Just a second," Kaige replied awhile later, snapping out of his thoughts.
Stepping away from the door and leaving it wide open, he headed back to the kitchen to see what Salena was doing. He was quiet with his steps, not wanting to gain her attention at that moment and cause a scene. He peeked around the corner and frowned in confusion at what he saw. She was doing the dishes? "What the hell?" he muttered under his breath, shaking his head. If that's what she wanted to do, he wasn't going to stop her, especially now when he needed her to be busy with something else. He stood there for a minute longer, then quietly turned back around and headed for the door. He could only hope that he had enough time to finish up with this strange girl before Salena finished doing what she was doing. He wanted to avoid confrontation at all costs, even though none of this was his fault or doing.
He hurried back to the door and placed his hand on the knob again, ready to shut it as soon as he could. "Right, uh.." He paused to brush his hair out of his face, then looked back to her, though not directly at her. "Karin, you said?" he asked, leaning back on his heels. He looked at her extended hand, but his remained on the door and at his side. "I have a thing with other people touching me," he lied. He briefly wondered if she was some undercover person sent over here by the hospital or somewhere else. You never knew with these humans. It was hard to tell. "I'm Kaige," he added a moment later, crossing his arms over his chest. "Not that it really matters, nor should it matter because I won't be seeing you after this."
He wondered how close Salena was to finishing those dishes, glancing over his shoulder every few seconds. He then looked back to Karin and arched a brow. "Unless you're wanting to know about a giant spider, I can't help you out here." He shrugged. "And that's probably not what you're looking for because it's dead anyway, so I'm not any help to you. You should probably go," he said as he took a step back. He didn't know what else to say and he was rather certain he couldn't help this girl out... if she was really even looking for help on something in the first place. [/blockquote]

Karin smiled at the man at the door, and retracted her hand like it was no big deal. So he was some kind of nut or hermit after all, hm? She stuck her foot in the door incase he decided to try to shut it on her. She didn't come out here for nothing. She was going to get information one way of the other, whether it was about the moth or just why this guy was holed up all the way out here by himself.
"I'm sure you would be more help than you'd think." She rose a brow and dropped the smile. "Look, to be honest, I just sort of stumbled upon your house. I didn't know there would be anyone living here... but if I could just ask some questions. If you've seen anything out of the ordinary out here..."
She took a peek inside. "Did you build this house?" She quickly changed the subject. "By yourself? Its fairly impressive. Simple... but, nice. Perhaps you could show me a bit more of it? You know, I do a bit of construction myself." She smiled impressively at him, her bright lips curling smugly.
"Look..." She tried to get back down to business. "I've been out here for a while now, and I really don't want to go home empty handed. If you could just spare a few moments of your time..."

Kaige sighed and brought his hand to his eyes, rubbing them vigorously. It was obvious this girl wasn't going to leave unless she got what she wanted and that thought irritated Kaige to know end. He really didn't want to be bothered by some stranger, especially when he knew nothing about what she was looking for. "What do you want?" he asked, no longer playing the stupid act. "I already told you I don't know anything about whatever "insect" you're looking for, if you're even looking for one." It was obvious he wasn't too thrilled. Both his expression and tone were unfriendly. The normal, typical Kaige was starting to show just like before.
"The only thing out of the ordinary that I've seen out here is a giant spider far away from here and you," he snapped, cracking his knuckles. It was true, after all. Some random stranger showing up at his door counted as out of the ordinary in his book. He didn't care what she thought. He glanced back over his shoulder and wondered when Salena would be done. He really didn't want any arguments today. He looked back to Karin, eyes narrowed. "You're rather nosy, aren't you?" he asked, crossing his arms over his chest. "This," he motioned to the house, "is technically private property, so why don't you do me a favor and just go?" he asked rudely, tapping his foot against the wooden floor.
"Yes, I built this house and why would I let some stranger in it just to look around?" he scoffed, looking at her like she was stupid. "I don't know who you are or where you came from, so it's not happening." He glanced down, noticing her foot was in the doorway. That was nice. He couldn't even close the door now unless he wanted to hurt her, and he was getting really close to it. "I already told you, I don't know anything about any damn bug you're looking for, alright? I'm sorry to say, but it looks like you're going to be leaving empty handed. Such a shame." His voice was full of sarcasm. Any thoughts from before of being nice to people went out the door. He wanted nothing more than to be left alone now. [/blockquote]

Karin set her hand on the frame of the door, smoke leaking out from the palms of her hands. In a way, the man's arrogance was quickly beginning to bring her to anger, but she had it well under control. Having been a mother often tended to do that to a person. Defiantly, she just smiled.
"Of course. I didn't come out here to cause any grief. I was just curious if you had seen any signs of the insect... even signs you may not have noticed before. Burn marks... Excessive amounts of pollen in any area... Things of that sort. Really, if you have no further information for me, I am just wasting my time."
She moved her foot and her hand away from the door way and widened the gap between herself and the crazy hermit. She laughed only slightly after speaking with him. "You must not have lived here for too long if you believed that giant spiders were out of the norm. Or maybe you have just been lucky not to come across them as often as some of us." She lifted her chin and pointed to a massive, discolored bruise on her neck. It was just one of her many battle wounds.
"Sorry for the inconvenience." She apologized. "For both of us." She added in a mumble. As much as she liked hearing people share their own stories, she just didn't have the time for it, even if the man was open to explaining why he chose to live out in the middle of the woods. This hunt was beginning to prove as useful as her first failure. Unbeknownst to herself, her devilish smile quickly faded into a tragic frown as the horror of her past returned to her memory. The past she would always blame herself for.
"Thanks anyway..." She spoke, not realizing she had said it almost in a whisper. By now, Salena had finished up the few dishes she had been cleaning, and had even dried and put them away. She snuck out to hear what was getting Kaige so fired up. When she saw the girl, she never expected for her to have anything to do with Kaige. After all, if she was important to him in any way, she was sure he would have said something, at least anything to hint at her. Another sure fire hint was just how Kaige was speaking to her.
She recognized the girl's sorrow-filled frown, but she had no sympathy. She didn't know her, neither did she care to know her. She just wasn't all that important. A stranger that shared nothing in common with them, so why should she care? Still, she listened in to the final words of the conversation, her impeccable hearing once more threatening to cause trouble.
"To be a wolf again..."
Those were the words she could have sworn she heard the red-head utter under her breath. Her eyes instantly wondered in curiosity, and she allowed herself to get closer, probably seeming a little nosier than she was really trying to be. If she had spoken those words, then why? And was she talking about them? What did she know about her and Kaige? Who was this stranger, and to what importance was her presence here?
Even as she watched the woman walk away, she was sure she had whispered something about the Forgotten Forest, but how was it possible that she knew of the place? Shinrin turned to Kaige, wondering if he was as curious as she was. "Who was that?" she butted in. "What did she have to say?"
Normally, she wouldn't have cared what a stranger had said to Kaige, but she was wondering if she had put those words into her own mind. "Did she say something about TF?"
---
She left the hermit's home, her thoughts becoming entangled in her memories. She seemed so distant from the outside world. All she could think about was how each hunt, each mystery she tried to solve, was just a way to try and solve the first mystery; the time when her children disapeared. All outside noise was present, but unimportant to her.
All except when she thought she heard somebody say something about TF. She stopped short and turned back, her yellow eyes locked onto the doorway of the house in the middle of the woods. Maybe she had imagined it, but she was sure she heard it. Karin had better hearing than anyone she had met in the past. It came with the territory.
A part of her wanted to not care, and move on. But another part of her wanted to satisfy her curiousity. But maybe she really had imagined everything. In that case, she didn't want bring anything up that would only wind up upsetting herself.

Kaige said nothing as the other girl left. He stood there for a moment and watched as she walked off, making sure she was really leaving, before he stepped back from the door and shut it quietly. He didn't know who she was or what she really wanted, but he was glad she was gone. He was in no mood to be pestered by some stranger, especially when he wasn't fully recovered from the previous week. He nearly jumped when Salena started talking, having not known she was in the room. Without saying much, he merely shrugged in response and headed for the stairs. "I don't know what she wanted," he said as he headed up the stairs slowly. "Something about some kind of bug." He shook his head. "I don't know."
He wondered if that's all the girl wanted to know about or if there was more. It was strange how she came across his house, especially when he was so far out into the forest. He wanted to forget about it and move on with the day, but something was bugging him. He couldn't quite figure out what it was. "You go talk to her if you want. I know you've been around the forest a lot. Maybe you have the answers she's looking for." He shrugged again and made it to the second floor. "I'm going to take a shower. I'll be down in a few minutes. If you want to stick around, fine. If you don't, that's fine too. Whatever keeps you happy." He smiled faintly before turning to head into his room.
"Shit. I still have work to do," he muttered to himself as he rummaged through his dresser for clothes. He had forgotten about the blueprints and other sketches he needed to finish up. He was probably way behind now. "Great. More stuff to stress out about." With a sigh, Kaige grabbed a few things and headed off to the bathroom. He took a rather quick shower, toweled off and dressed himself, pulled his hair back into his trademark messy ponytail, and bounded back down the stairs. He was beginning to feel worn out, but he had a few things he needed to finish. He would just have to suck it up and deal with it. [/blockquote]

Salena watched Kaige disapear once more upstairs. She wondered if this was going to be a habit of his, but she didn't give it a second thought.
"Some kind of bug?" She repeated quietly to herself. She bit her lips. She had lived in the forest for some time, and she had seen numerous bugs. If the woman really was looking for some clues about some bug, maybe she could be of some help. Either way, Salena was a bit suspicious of her. Something about her just didn't feel normal.
She turned and headed out the door, leaving it slightly open. "Hey!" She yelled out to her, hoping to get her attention. Just before the red haired woman decided to move on, she easily heard the stranger's voice, and was surprised to turn around to see a young, pretty lady coming out of the hermit's house.
"Hi!" Karin waved, and walked back to where the stranger was waiting. "My name's Karin." She said with a soft smile, hoping to win the girl over by simply being nice. She held out her hand, just as she had done for the hermit.
"H-hello." Salena spoke nervously, carefully shaking the woman's hand. "You had some questions? About a bug?" She was careful not to share her name.
Karin smiled. Finally, she seemed to be getting somewhere. If this girl knew anything about the moth, she would finally have a clue in finding it. "Yes!" Karin spoke excitedly. "I'm searching for a moth. I've been looking for it for quite some time. If you have seen it, or maybe, misplaced burn markings, or odd scratches... Any sort of odd thing like that, it would be a big help."
Salena stared at the woman for a while before finally speaking up. "The weirdest thing i've seen out here is you." She didn't mean for it to sound hurtful. It was just true. "How'd you find this place?" She asked suspicously.
Karin frowned. Looked like the crazy hermit wasn't the only freak in the forest. "Like I told your..." She tried to guess what kind of relationship the two had together, but in all honesty, she just wasn't sure. "Like I said to the man of the house, I was searching for the moth, I just happened to stumble across the house, and I thought I'd ask if you knew anything."
Salena contemplated what the woman was saying. Maybe she was being honest. If that was the case, she couldn't help her. "I'm sorry. I havn't seen any... moth?" She figured if the spiders were huge, the moth she was looking for probably was too. She didn't remember seeing any small bugs crawling around. "But listen, the man here doesn't want to be bothered. Keep this location to yourself. If you cause any trouble, you will get trouble." She actually sounded somewhat intimidating, just not to Karin.
The woman smiled and nodded in agreement. "Of course. I'm not here to cause trouble. I just wanted to ask if you guys have seen anything. But... since you havn't, do you mind me asking what you two are doing out here in the middle of the woods? Its dangerous."
Salena scoffed. She knew how dangerous it was, she didn't need anyone to tell her that. Kaige's attitude seemed to be rubbing off on her. "I don't live in this house. But the woods... " She looked around, marvelling at the magnificently tall trees, which were bigger than anything she could have seen back at home in the Forgotten Forest.
"The forest will always be our home." She answered simply.
Karin thought about what she had said, and she had to agree. Even though her house wasn't built inside the forest, she felt like she belonged amongst the trees and shrubs. It was always her home. She kind of missed it.
"Yeah." She said, agreeing wholeheartedly. "I see what you mean. I used to be...rather attached to a forest too." She looked away in distraction. "A forest that is to be long forgotten..."
Her words just made Salena even more curious. Her brows arched in question. "Where do you come from?"
"Hm?" The question snapped Karin back into focus, but she was confused by her question. "Where do I come from?"
"Yeah." Salena tried to make her understand exactly what she was asking. "You don't look like someone from Taikai Ueki. Where do you come from?"
"That's an odd question to ask a stranger. But, since I don't even know you, and since you probably aren't going to believe me, I'll tell you exactly where I came from. I come from a forgotten forest. The Forgotten Forest. I used to be a wolf!"
She had said it in such a tone, that anyone would have thought she was being sarcastic. Salena's eyes shot open in shock. Who exactly was this girl? Was she telling the truth? Was it possible that three of them had been turned into humans? Were there more?
Something inside her didn't want to believe Karin. If she was telling the truth, then why had fate put her here? Just when she was beginning to feel that Kaige and her could possibly start over. In a way, it made her... angry.
"Who the hell do you think you are?!" She suddenly burst into rage, startling Karin, who had believed she was just as innocent as a little child. "Are you here to mock us? To play with our heads?! Do you think this is funny?!"
Karin was suddenly taken aback by the stranger's words. "No, no! Of course not!" She tried to calm her down. She didn't come here to cause trouble. "I told you, you wouldn't believe me. I came here to ask a few questions. You answered mine, and I answered yours. End of story. If you don't believe me, fine. It makes no difference. I didn't expect you to, but I'm an honest person, and when somebody asks me a question, I answer them."
Without waiting for a response, Karin turned and made for the exit.
Salena felt somewhat bad for what she had said. If she was telling the truth, and she really had been a wolf, then there had to be a reason she had made it to Taikai Ueki. Her curiosity wasn't about to let the woman get away.
"Wait! Karin!" She shouted out ahead. Karin turned around, and stomped her foot into the grass. Smoke began to rise from her fists. "What else do you possibly have to say?" She asked, standing fiercly at a distance.
Salena swallowed. "I just... found it hard to believe you, because... I'm the same way." Karin frowned, her eye brows slanting inward. "What are you talking about?"
"My name is Shinrin Featherwind. I am from the Forgotten Forest."
Karin stared. She wasn't sure whether to believe the girl. She didn't want to, but at the same time, the way she walked, the way her ears perked to the forest sounds, the way her nostril flared when she was trying to smell something... It was all very similar to how she acted when she had first become a human.
"Yeah?" She quizzed her. "Qtpbr oy." She spoke. It was an ancient language, only known by those in the forgotten forest. Salena smiled when she heard it. Now, she believed.
"O sz ejsy o dsu." She replied.
Karin's eyes lit up. Now she believed too. And for a moment, the two just smiled at each other, unsure what to do next, as if they were long lost sisters. Then to both of their surprise, they hugged briefly, amazed that there was somebody just like them.
"I thought I was the only one!" Karin exclaimed excitedly. Salena shrugged and shook her head. "Nope, you're not alone." Karin's grinned curiously. "Are there more?!" Salena shrugged. "J...just one that I know of." "The hermit in the house?" Salena laughed at the word hermit. She never would have called him that. She nodded.
"Oh wow..." Karin stepped back for a moment. Briefly, she wondered if it was possible that the same would have happened to her pups, but she didn't want to get her hopes up. "I must talk, with the both of you... this... this beats the hell out of some moth any day."
Salena frowned, looking back at the house. She knew how Kaige would feel about that. He probably wouldn't be too happy about it. Still, it brought up so many questions, and she felt that Kaige just had to be a part of it.
"I... I will ask. Don't get your hopes up, Kaige is..." She looked for a word to discribe him, but quickly gave up and shrugged. "Kaige is Kaige. He doesn't like strangers."
Karin nodded. She could expect as much coming from such a hermit, but it was worth a shot.
"You can stand by the door, but I wont ask you in without Kaige's permission. Who knows, maybe he will be curious about all this too." She could hope, couldn't she?
While Karin waited at the door step, Shinrin rushed inside to find Kaige. Without respecting any privacy, she ran up the stairs and knocked on Kaige's door. "Kaige, if you have time... could we talk? Real quick?"
She was unsure of what Kaige's reaction was going to be, but she was still very much excited.

When Kaige got back downstairs, he saw that Salena was nowhere to be seen. His gray eyes wandered to the open door and he walked over to it. "Should've known," he muttered to himself, shaking his head. He had a slight feeling she would've wanted to talk to the girl, but at the same time he was a little surprised. She didn't seem like the kind of person who'd talk to strangers, but what did he know? He leaned against the door frame and watched them for awhile, only partially wondering what they were talking about. He didn't really care about that, he was more-so watching to see if the girl was going to try and do something to Salena. It struck him as odd that he found himself slightly protective over her. Maybe it was just because he had known her for so long, or maybe it was because he actually cared about her and just refused to come to terms with it. Whatever it was, he wasn't going to admit it out loud.
After determining that the other girl, Karin, wasn't going to do anything, he turned away and headed off to his working area. It was just a large desk, one that Kaige built himself, tucked away in the furthest corner of the room, sitting besides another large window that overlooked the forest. With a disgruntled sigh, he wandered on over to the desk, pulled the chair out, and sat down. Notes, blue prints and sketches were scattered across the desk top, unfinished work from the previous week. He had a lot to finish and he had no idea when the deadline was. "Great," he said to himself, picking up a pencil. He had no idea where to start and it looked like he wasn't going to get any work done anytime soon with Salena coming up to him.
He dropped his pencil and turned around in the chair, rubbing his face irritably with his hand. "What is it?" he asked, suddenly sounding tired. He wasn't trying to sound annoyed with her, it was mainly because of everything else going on. "I have a lot of work I need to catch up on," he said, glancing back to the mess of papers. He looked back to her, wondering what exactly she wanted to talk about. He had a sneaking suspicion it had to do with that Karin girl and he really wasn't sure if he was up for that. He still wasn't feeling completely better and he was already beginning to stress out about work. It seemed like he would never win. [/blockquote]

Salena frowned when he answered her. It wasn't that she felt hurt by his rushing. Actually, it was just because she felt bad for bothering him. "Um..." She didn't know where to start. She didn't want to upset him, but she wanted to tell him about the conversation they had just had.
"That Karin girl..." She started off. "She kind of blurted something out, and at first I didn't believe her, but... I do, now." She stalled, trying to work up a way for Kaige to get interested. She knew he probably wouldn't. "I found out that we have something in common." It seemed like a rediculous thing to say, but it was true.
"Kaige, she claims that she is from the Forgotten Forest. OUR Forgotten Forest. I thought she was lying, I thought she found out about us and was trying to pull a fast one, but now... I really believe she is in the situation we are in. She used to be a wolf."

Kaige sighed and turned back to his desk, picking up the pencil again. "That's great," he muttered as he began to work on one of the sketches of a building. He really didn't want to be reminded of that forest or anything else that was from his previous life. All he wanted to do was move on from that and try to make a better life for himself now as a human. Of course, he couldn't avoid everything from the past. One of those things was standing right by him. He shook his head as he continued working on the sketch. "I just... really don't want to talk about that stuff." He paused and stared down at the paper, tapping the pencil against the desk. He could tell Salena wanted to talk about it, or have them all talk together, but he wasn't game. "I'm sorry, but I've got some stuff I need to catch up on and since it's my job, it's kind of important. Gotta keep this roof over my head, y'know." He hoped she wouldn't be too mad or upset about it, but it was hard to tell with her sometimes. Then again, he was kind of the same way so it was only fair. "If it was any other time, maybe... but I'm still not feeling great and this work..." His voice trailed off and he went back to working on the sketch. It sounded like he was making up excuses, and in a way, he was, but it was still the truth. "It's just too much right now." [/blockquote]

Salena frowned, but nodded, as thought saying that she understood. She turned away and quietly walked out of the room, softly shutting the door behind him. She went down the stairs, and took a deep breath before opening the front door once more.
It kind of made her sad to see the woman in front of her. She had so many questions. She wanted to know why they were all here. She needed answers. But at the moment, it wasn't Kaige's interest, and she chose to respect that.
"I'm sorry." She held her hand on the door, glancing down at the ground. "We don't want to talk... not now." She looked up at Karin, and really felt bad. She could see that Karin had just as much curiosity within her as herself. "We left the Forgotten Forest far behind. It just... isn't a part out our lives that we really want to remember. "
Karin could understand that. After all, her own life in the Forgotten Forest was a tragedy. Still, she was hoping that it could reviel something about her children. She still felt like such a failure, after searching for years, and never being able to find them. She cursed the day the black wolf granted her immortality.
"No, I get it." Karin said with a smile. She grabbed the door when Salena went to shut it, startling the poor girl. "Some other time, yeah?" Her smile was easily contageous, and Salena couldn't help but smile weakly back. "Yeah... maybe." Was all she could say. Karin nodded, and let her hand off the door. Salena shut it, and walked away. She couldn't look back.
Karin sighed, and nodded. Just as usual, she had wasted another day of her life. Still, at least she had found that plant. Perhaps it could be of use in her herbal medicines... She turned away and left that place, hopefully for good. She knew the questions would eat away at her, but she couldn't listen to them. She just had to ignore them.
----
Salena sighed and stood with her back against the wall. Slowly, she slid down and sat on the floor. In a way, she was glad they didn't talk. She hated to admit it, but she was already becoming so jealous of Kaige's attention. She didn't want some other girl coming in and taking him away from her. Then again, she had to remind herself that Kaige belonged to nobody but himself, and that was probably the way it was always going to be. She was happy enough just being this close.
Still... she had so many questions. She wanted to know thing. She wanted to know about the stranger who just happened to show up on the door step. She wanted to know about the giant, fire breathing bug she had been talking about, and she wanted to know what it all had to do with them. And she was almost sad, because for a slight moment, she actually though she could have a friend...
But all dreams are just simply that: a dream. And that was just how she was going to have to get used to things.

It was dark. Water could be heard dripping down from somewhere, but it wasn't raining. A small, faint light pierced through an opening a few yards ahead. The ground was hard and crumbly with dirt, crushed leaves and small twigs. Kaige felt something crawling on him and his eyes snapped open, darting around trying to figure out what it was. He laid there for a moment, silent as he let his eyes adjust to the darkness. He could see walls of dirt around him, but he had no idea where he was. He caught the light in the corner of his eye and turned himself toward it, crawling up a rather long tunnel to get to it. Something wasn't right about this. There was something both very different and very wrong happening, but he couldn't figure it out just yet.
When he finally reached the opening, he could see that he was near a clearing somewhere. The sky was cloudy and the sun was just beginning to rise, its fiery orange rays beginning to spill across the land before him. He stepped out of the opening and onto the grass, noticing how it felt different. When he looked down to the ground, he was shocked to see paws and fur. His paws and fur. "What the hell?" he wondered out loud to himself, noticing how even his voice was different. He looked around the area and saw things scattered around, but he couldn't tell what they were just yet with the sun still in the process of lighting everything up. Something was very wrong here and he needed to figure out what was going on.
Kaige began to wander a little ways away and spotted a small pond that lay ahead. He quickly broke into a run and stopped at the waters edge, looking down. The sky grew brighter and he stared down at the wolf looking up at him. It was him alright, just a younger version. He stared at his reflection intently, having no words for any of this. He was confused. What was going on? He then noticed something matted to his fur and upon closer inspection, he noticed it was blood. "What is this?!" he asked to no one in particular, backing away from the water. It was then when he heard the familiar menacing laughter in the distance.
It all dawned on him then. He knew what this was and if he turned around, he would see it all again. The laughter grew closer, the owner of it being somewhere in the surrounding forest. "Why don't you turn around, Kaige?" the voice asked, crimson eyes glowing brightly in the distance. "Turn around and see what happened." The laughter started up again, ringing throughout the clearing. Kaige could feel his heart begin to beat faster and his breathing quickened. And just yards away, the wolf who destroyed everything stepped out from the shadowy trees. The two stared each other down, one horrified and the other pleased. "How does it feel, Kaige?" Thanatos asked, grinning widely as Kaige began to back away. "What do you think you're doing? You're not going anywhere. Turn around and see what you did."
Kaige could do nothing as Thanatos entered his mind and forced him to turn around to see the carnage that had just taken place moments ago. Bodies of wolves, Kaige's pack mates and family, lay scattered about, torn and broken. Blood soaked the ground beneath his feet and painted the trees and shrubbery. He tried to move away, but he was powerless. Thanatos began to laugh wildly, enjoying the pain that Kaige was feeling. "How does it feel?" he asked again through his laughter. "How does it feel to lose everything and know that is was all your fault?"
Kaige awoke with a jolt. His heart was beating loudly and visibly through his chest. He felt cold and clammy. Beads of sweat dripped down his forehead and onto the desk where his work lay unfinished. He had no idea how long he had been out, but nothing he was working on had been finished. He sat there silently for a moment, trying to calm his nerves and get back to normal. It had been awhile since he had a flashback, but it seemed so realistic that time. What had triggered it this time? His thoughts went back to that girl named Karin and what Salena had said about her being a wolf, but how would that have done it? That happened before he ever came across the Forgotten Forest.
Feeling a sudden burst of anger, Kaige stood up quickly and threw all the papers off his desk, sending them flying into the air. What the hell was going on? He made his way out of his work area, his feet meeting the floor with loud thuds. He didn't know if Salena let that girl in or if she had left, but he was going to find out. When he came to the living room he saw no one but Salena. He walked over to the window in just a couple of steps and looked out, but saw no sign of her. He wanted to know what was going on now. Something wasn't right here. Without saying a word to Salena, he yanked the door open and stepped outside and down the steps, heading for the forest. He would just go find her. If he was lucky, she wasn't too far away. [/blockquote]

The further away she got from that hermit's house in the woods, the angrier she suddenly became. Her whole life, she had been searching. For too long, she searched for the two things she never should have let out of her sight in the first place, and now she was in deep regret. Losing her children wasn't the only thing... She had lost Dagger too.
Before Dagger had come around, Karin was mad at the world. She hated everything. She hated everybody. She could never do enough to satisfy her pack. She was never good enough. Before she met Dagger, she had never even thought about loving anybody. Never thought about settling down. Never even imagined giving birth.
But then Dagger DID come along, and he changed her life DRAMATICALLY. She loved him, and they both loved the pups. They would have given their lives to protect them. Dagger did.
Karin knew she was a failure. She lost everything that was important to her. Now she was in this whole new world, and she couldn't even find one stinking bug. It was beginning to really bug her. She never asked for this. She never asked to fall in love, she just... did. And she would do anything if she could go back and save them now... anything. She would work an eternity for the devil if she had to, she just wanted to bring them back.
But there was NO bringing them back, and she knew that. Lashing out, she threw a fist at a tree. Nearly instantly, her fist caught fire, and as it hit, the fire latched onto the tree, quickly spreading down to the roots of the tree. She walked away from it, letting it burn. She would burn the whole forest if she had to.
Then she thought about Dagger again, and what he had once told her... Life wasn't always happy. Sometimes, it down right sucked. But that didn't mean you had to hate it. That didn't mean you had to be mad at it. You could only do what you could to start over, and try again.
The words stuck in her head. She knew he was right. At the moment, it was just something he had told her to keep her from beating him to death after being demoted in her pack rank for a stupid mistake. But everytime she became angry, she thought about Dagger. He was always willing to calm her down. He was always there for her, even after death.
She let out a long breath, and as she did, the blaze on the tree shrunk, until it vanished all together, leaving nothing but charred bark and a smokey scent in the air. She sighed, and relaxed her fists until they fell limply to her side.
She rested against a tree. "You were right Dagger..." She whispered. "You were always right." She knew she was just going to have to get over things. It was what Dagger would have wanted. He always told her that life wasn't her fault, no matter how much she wanted to blame herself. Perhaps it was time she started believing that.
Her ears quickly caught the sound of grass and twigs crunching. By instinct, she grabbed a dagger from her pocket and jumped into a fighting stance. If it was some spider, she was ready to kill. The dagger jumped ablaze with fire, ready to dance.
But what she saw coming through the trees wasn't a spider, or any kind of bug. What she saw her was even more rare way out here in the forest. Was it a...person? She sniffed the air, desperately wishing she had her full wolf senses back. For now, she was just going to have to wait till he came a little closer...

Kaige really didn't know why he was going after the girl. She was nothing but a stranger. She wasn't important to him in any way, shape or form. He couldn't help her out with her bug problem, and okay, she may have previously been a wolf. So what? He wanted no memories of the Forgotten Forest. While that place may not have been too terrible considering where he came from, hardly anything good happened there. That place held nothing but mostly bad memories for him and he really wanted to try and forget them, but it seemed like it was going to be impossible. He would never be able to escape his past. It wound continue to haunt him until the day he died, if death even came knocking on his doorstep. Knowing his luck, he would be doomed to live on this planet for eternity.
The thought of living forever was in his mind constantly. He hated living enough as it was and having to live forever with none of his family around would just be torture. He then began to think of his life currently and what would happen. Would he just continue living on as a nobody, or would he make something of himself? Sure, he had a rather steady job at the moment, but it wasn't something that he enjoyed. Would he meet someone and have a family, or would he remain forever alone? His thoughts then drifted to Salena and he shook his head, nearly laughing out loud. That was nothing to think about at the time. Being together again wasn't something he really wanted to think about and he wasn't sure if he wanted it again. But still, he couldn't help but wonder...
Movement up ahead caught his eye and all previous thoughts drew back to the depths of his mind. He stopped in his steps for a moment and narrowed his eyes, focusing in on what it was. "Aha," he murmured to himself, recognizing the girl from earlier. He moved forward again, picking up his pace in order to catch up with her. Twigs snapped and leaves crumbled beneath his heavy boots, their sounds filling the forest air. He didn't want to sneak up on her quietly, that was usually a bad idea with most people, but he hoped she wasn't one of those people who attacked no matter what. He could easily enter her mind to figure out what might happen, but he wanted to leave it a surprise. He seemed to be getting a lot of those lately anyway.
"Hey!" he called out, growing closer to where she was. If she hadn't known someone was coming before, she would now. When he finally caught up to her, he saw the dagger and the flames. He stopped a few feet away, not intimidated. "If you want to attack, go for it," he said calmly. "Add another scar to my collection. No big deal." He shrugged, eyeing her down. He was still unsure of her, but he didn't feel like his life was endangered. "Now...," he said slowly, taking a few steps away to the side. "Let's get down to business... what are you really after?" he asked, crossing his arms over his chest. "Is it really a moth, or are you some sort of secret agent that was sent out here?" He studied her momentarily, wondering if what Salena had said about her being a wolf was true. He didn't recognize her from the Forgotten Forest, but it was a large place with many different packs. It was easy to not come across another wolf from another pack there. "And... is what Salena said true?" He didn't explain what he meant by that. He figured she would know. [/blockquote]

Seeing the hermit, she relaxed herself, letting the fire sizzle out while she safetly put the dagger away. In a way, seeing him there made her angry, but she thought about Dagger, and it instantly calmed her. Then she felt hopeful. Maybe the guy had changed his mind.
She watched him for a while; the way he moved and talked. He wasn't nearly as wolfish as the girl, Shinrin, but the signs were still there. She kept the glare on her face though. She was done with trying to charm him.
"I... really was looking for the moth." She said honestly, trying to be polite. "I guess you can say that with all the time I have on my hands, I was a little bored, so I wanted to find the 'dragon of the forest'." She crossed her arms, shifting her hips to balance herself in her heels.
"And yeah." Shr shrugged. "I come from the Forgotten Forest. I was..." She cirled him, slowly, checking out his features, amazed at how human they were, despite herself having been human for some time. "A wolf. Just... like... you..."
It was amazing to see somebody else with the same, unique, problem she had. It was strange, but a good strange. Or so she hoped. She rose a brow at him. "And you? You really were a wolf?" She questioned him, more intrigued than anything. "I mean, you look so... human." Human was one word for it. Devilishly handsome was another, but she wasn't going to say that.
Then she grinned at him. "Could you... prove it?" She asked, politely, testing him. She wanted to see what he could do. She wanted to see if he was quick, like she was, and she was curious as to what sort of power he had, if any. That was one thing. If he was a wolf from the Forgotten Forest, he must have had an ability.
"Show me what you can do!" She barked almost too excitedly, probably taking the conversation faster than what she should have. Showing off, she held out her arms and grinned as fire consumed them, flickering wildly. "I'm a... fire starter." She shrugged. Of course, she knew she could do more than just that, but that was enough at the time. Finished with her demonstration, she lowered her arms, the fire licking up to her finger tips, then disapearing as if it had crawled into her skin.
"What about you? Can you do... something?"

Seeing that she wasn't going to slice him up with her fiery blade, Kaige relaxed and let his guard down, but only slightly. You could never be too sure of people these days, even if they seemed harmless. Of course, he was sure this girl could do some damage, but he wasn't there to think about stuff like that. He just wanted some answers just like she did. "Right...," he said slowly, narrowing his eyes. "Don't you think you could do something better with your time? Roaming around in a forest full a giant man-eating bugs doesn't sound very... safe, but hey, whatever gets you going." He shrugged slightly and leaned back on his heels, glancing up at the sky peeking through the treetops. It had to be some time in the afternoon now. His thoughts briefly went back to his unfinished work, but he shook it off when Karin started speaking again.
Salena must've told her he had been a wolf. He didn't care - it wasn't like he was ashamed or embarrassed by it. Of course, he wouldn't tell some random stranger off the street about it and while this girl was a stranger, she had been like them. It was different. "I was a wolf, yes," he responded, nodding faintly. "Not something I really want to remember, but there's not a whole lot I can do about it." He let his arms drop down to his sides and placed his hands in his pockets. "I guess I'm just lucky," he said with a half smirk in response to her looking human comment. "Although I don't really know how I'd still look like a wolf being a human and all. The only thing that carried over was the scars and a few crimson flecks from my previous eye color."
He had no idea what she meant by "proving it" until he saw what she could do. It was... interesting, to say in the least. Definitely a little more interesting than what he could do, which wasn't even that great in the first place. He hated his power. It was more like a curse to him than anything. He never understood why some people were jealous of it. He would give anything to trade it away for something else, or to just get rid of it in general and be... normal. As close to normal as he could get anyway, but that wasn't going to happen.
"I can... I can do something, yes," he said with a nod as he took a step forward, his eyes to the ground. He wasn't sure if she would be okay with him proving his power to her, but she had asked and he was going to tell her rather than show her. "It's not something I can really... show you," he started, grinning ever so slightly at the ground, "But..." He paused and looked up to her. He really didn't know why he found it so amusing and it was rare for him to actually smile, but he did. "Just a moment ago, you had a thought." He paused again, trying not to burst into laughter. "You think I'm devilishly handsome." He said nothing for a moment and only grinned coyly. "I'm sorry for invading your privacy, but that's the only way I can show you my power. I'm a Seer. I have the ability to read and hear people's thoughts and feel what they're feeling at that very moment I enter their mind. I also get glimpses of the future, but they're very rare and quite painful. And that.. that's about really all I can do. Not impressive, I know. I'm not too fond of it myself." He shrugged. "I'm also pretty good at reading people's body language to get a feel for what they're feeling, but I guess that comes with the whole power thing." [/blockquote]

Karin rose her brow. She wasn't embarassed by the least bit about him reading that portion of her thoughts. Infact, she often spoke her mind, so what did it matter if he could read hers? It was just a thought, and nothing more. So she liked the way he looked, what would that matter?
She was however intrigued with his power. She understood how it could get...annoying. Especially if you didn't have any control of it, and read things without meaning to, but he seemed in rather control of his power. She looked at him stupidly.
"Not impressive?" She scoffed. "You have the ability to understand what somebody is going through, to read into not just their minds, but their hearts... how is that not impressive? I'd kill for somebody to understand why I am the way I am." She glanced away. She had somebody... it was Dagger, although, he didn't need any power to read her heart. He just... could. She missed him terribly.
"So I have to be careful about what I think around you, hm?" She laughed. Not like she cared either way. If she had something important on her mind, she usually just spoke it. "If you can read minds, then you can tell I'm telling the truth."
She crossed her arms. "Oh, and about the bug thing... Yeah, I know its dangerous. But when you've lived as long as I have, regular life just starts to seem... boring." For some reason, having just that one thing in common with the man, she felt compelled to talk to him.
"The 'Dragon of the forest'..." She shrugged. "Biggest bug out there. They say its dangerous, and it breaths fire... I dunno, it kinda reminds me of me. I don't just want to find it, I want it." She sighed. "But... the way the evidence is... I'm starting to believe that it doesn't even exsist. I was really wondering if my trip out here wasn't just, a waste..."
Her voice trailed off, but she wasn't thinking of anything. She didn't want this "seer" to know anything about her personal life, not at the moment anyway. She looked over at him and smiled. "Then I met you two. A rare bunch, really." She glanced down. "Do you... remember... how it happened?" She asked, a little shyly. Truth was, she was wondering about the black wolf that turned her human. If she could get some information on him, maybe she could find him, and maybe he could send her back in time to find her pups, or at least get rid of the stupid immortality curse so she could die peacefully.

Kaige wouldn't admit it, but he was relieved to know she wasn't upset about. He knew just about anyone else probably would've ripped his head off or chewed him out for reading into their thoughts. It was obvious this girl was different and it was a nice change, although he hadn't gone digging through people's minds lately. It had been quite awhile since he had done that. So long, in fact, he had been a wolf when he had last done it. He still wasn't sure if he missed those days. Too many bad things had happened and not enough good things showed themselves to convince him it would be worth it to go back if he ever had the chance. This was his opportunity to make things better and make a better life for himself.
Shaking himself from his thoughts, he looked back to Karin. When he spoke, his tone had changed. The amusement from just a minute ago was no longer there. His expression darkened as if a shadow had passed over. "It's not impressive when it comes with consequences," he said quietly, looking off to the side. He didn't elaborate on the subject. It was all he would say for the time being, but what he said was true. The deaths of his pack mates and family members was all his fault. Had he not had the power he had, they would've lived a long, normal life and he never would've been the way he was now - human. He wanted to get over all of it, but it was something he would carry with him for eternity.
Like always, Kaige put up a mask. The darkened expression was gone and he was "normal" once again. "You don't have to watch your thoughts," he said as he pulled his hands out of his pocket to adjust his ponytail. "I don't look into minds anymore. Unless they have the ability to, people can't stop me from doing it and that's an invasion of privacy. I know I wouldn't want someone reading my thoughts without my knowing, so... I just don't really do it anymore." He shrugged and dropped his hands to his sides again. "You're an exception because I had to show you my power. You don't have to worry about anything else. You're safe."
He listened to her talk about the moth, but he didn't have much to contribute to the conversation. He didn't really see the appeal in giant bugs, but if it was special to her, so be it. He wouldn't judge her on it. "I don't really remember much of anything, really," he said, turning his attention back to her. "There are some things I remember, but when it comes to this whole human ordeal..." He paused and shook his head. "I haven't the slightest clue. I just... woke up like this, I guess you could say." He then remembered Salena back at the house. She was probably wondering what the hell he was doing or where he was. "I should probably get back to the house," he said, taking a few steps back. "You can come with if you want to. I'm sure Salena would like to talk to you. She doesn't get much out of me." He shrugged again and turned around, starting to walk back. "But if you'd like to look for your bug, that's fine," he called over his shoulder, grinning slightly. [/blockquote]

"Oh?" She commented after hearing his explain his situation with his mind control. "You don't do it, just because you feel it invades their privacy? I didn't know you were a noble man." She said sarcastically with a sly grin. "I feel safe already."
She had caught a glance at Kaige's emotions, but seeing as how he was seemingly trying to keep them covered up, she figured she had no business sticking her nose into it. She always felt she had a gift for telling what one was feeling... probably not nearly as much as a seer, but better than most. However, that in no way affected how she treated a stranger. If they seemed to want to keep it a secret, she just wouldn't bring it up.
She was a little disappointed hearing that he had no information for her about the black wolf. She still didn't have the information she wanted, and she was still no closer to getting her old life back. She knew she needed to accept that, it was just hard to do so. But hearing that she was invited back to talk to the both of them sparked her interest. Maybe Shinrin did remember something. At least, she could hope.
"I've been looking for that moth for a long time now, and I'm no closer to finding it than I was when I started off. Besides, two people who, just like me, had been turned from wolves into humans? All from the same forest? There's no way I can miss this opportunity."
She followed him, her face showing mature excitement. She had no idea what was in store for her, but she always liked a good mystery.
--
She couldn't believe she hadn't noticed him disapear. She had just a quick nap on the couch before she was awoken by a splitting headache. By that time, Kaige had gone out. She wasn't going to jump to conclusions, but at the same time, she was somewhat angry with Kaige. She figured he was out working or something... which was definately a bad idea when you had just gotten out of the hospital prematurely after being in a coma.
She peeked out the front door, to notice his figure approaching, and her thumping heart calmed itself. Maybe he had just gone out for a walk. There was nothing wrong with that.
Then she saw the second figure behind him. The color red jumped out at her, and she realized that it must have been the girl from before. So why was Kaige walking with her? Had he changed his mind and gone out to figure things out himself? She smirked, but only because once again, he had surprised her. And also because she was hoping that she would get the chance to talk with Karin, and she felt some what excited, the complete opposite of how she usually felt when she met somebody for the first time.

"Yes," Kaige replied as he walked ahead, his gaze down at the ground. "You should feel lucky. I wasn't always as considerate. You would've been lucky to get by me as a wolf without me reading your thoughts. I guess I was a nosy creature back then, or I just didn't care. Or both." He paused shortly and snorted. "I guess I just thought it was entertaining. I was able to do something without anyone else knowing. I'd have a full conversation with someone and know what they were really thinking and feeling and they never knew." He shrugged. "I guess I just stopped caring about all of that after awhile." And he had. After dealing with everything that had happened in his life, he just didn't care to know what anyone else was going through in their minds. When one good thing happened, something bad happened right after, and it all seemed to happen when he was younger. He didn't know what misfortune would take place while he was human, but whatever happened... happened.
He began to wonder about the black wolf she had mentioned. Was it possible that that same wolf had done the same thing to him and Salena? He then wondered if she had any memory of her transformation. It was all too strange that the three of them used to be wolves and came from the same location. Something was up, that was for sure. "Like I said, I've never seen or heard of any moth, but I've come across a giant spider." He shook his head at the memory. Something that large was just ridiculous. "Don't know if it had any special abilities, but it was pretty keen on making one of us a snack," he said, referring to him and Salena. "This forest out here is pretty crazy. It definitely has some stuff the other one didn't."
The trees began to thin out and he could see the clearing up ahead. He could see Salena's figure up ahead and he wondered if she was upset with him. He had just taken off out of nowhere after all, but knowing her, she would probably forgive him rather quickly if she was mad. "Who would've thought we'd ever run into someone who has the same background as us?" he said, still rather dumbfounded himself. "I mean, I can't say I had ever seen you around the Forgotten Forest, but still. It's pretty weird, but hey, at least we have something in common." He stopped walking when he made it to the stairs leading into the house to brush himself off. He was beginning to feel a lot better now and more like his normal self. Maybe the healing process would be quicker with him since he had been a wolf, but he wasn't getting his hopes up.
"Hello again," he said to Salena as he stepped inside. "Hope you're not mad at me for running off, but it's not like I went far. Besides, you know me. Feeling weak or not, I'll do what I want when I want." He smirked slightly before walking over to his desk to clean up the mess he had made earlier. "I brought something back for you," he said, motioning to Karin. "I figured you could use someone to talk to since I'm not much of a talker... or that interesting, but whatever." [/blockquote]

"I suppose." Laughed Karin on the way over to the house. "But this forest isn't exactly over flowing with war-crazed wolves with super powers. I kind of prefer the bugs."
She smiled at the thought of finally having something in common with somebody. That just wasn't the case with most people. Sure, she could stand their presence long enough, and nobody hated her, but it wasn't home. She felt like she was just talking to people behind glass walls, never really getting close enough to get to know them, and neither did she care enough to get to know them.
As they reapproached the house, she began to look at it in a whole new light. She actually felt bad for calling the man a hermit, now that she understood a bit more about him. She was excited to get to learn more about them, both him and the girl, though the mysteriousness of the man made him the primal target.
-----
Salena was glad to see that Kaige was doing alright. More than that, he seemed to be doing much better. He shocked her by his words, which reminded herself of the old Kaige, not the angry, violent Kaige she was getting accustomed to. It was a good feeling. And she was also glad to see Karin. Why Kaige had gone after her, she was unsure, but neither did she care. She was just glad to see her back.
"I couldn't be mad at you Kaige..." She said shyly. "Not for too long anyway... This is your house after all. I was more... worried than anything." It was a little hard for her to admit that she had been worried about him, but she wanted to keep up the new honest routine. It was much more... honest.
Karin stepped into the house after Kaige. Her defenses went up again, her instincts on guard, just in case. After all, now that she was inside of the house, there wasn't a whole lot of room for her to make a move if she had to, and there were also two of them. She was sure they were no threat, but that didn't keep her nerves as calm as she would have liked.
"Hey." She said to Shinrin, smiling. It was good to see her again, even if it hadn't been very long, and even though she had just met her. Already, she felt almost sisterly to her. Maybe that was just the sort of aura Shinrin had.
Shinrin smiled back at her, then smiled at Kaige. "Thanks..." She whispered. She wasn't sure if he had done this for her, or to satisfy his own curiousity, but either way, it was a nice gesture. She turned back to Karin, unsure of what to say. Luckily, Karin was much better at starting a conversation.
"So, your friend here can read minds." She said, intrigued. She tried to guess what Shinrin could do. Like herself, Shinrin appeared to have markings carry on from her wolf form too. Guessing from all the blue, she wondered if she could manipulate water or something of the sort. "What can you do?"
"What can I... er... do?" She looked over at Kaige, as if waiting for his permission to answer, then she turned back and shrugged. "I can... manipulate forestry. A little. Its not very.... good."
Karin was surprised by her answer. She didn't look like a wolf with an earth element... but then, she for one knew that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. "So you can make thing grow, bend twigs, what exactly?" Shinrin bit her lip, feeling a bit under pressure. "I don't know... I havn't used it, much. Just to... make sleeping on a bed of leaves more comfortable. I havn't been able to grow things since I became human..."
Karin nodded slowly, then smiled. "Well, its still impressive. I never would have guessed, really. I mean, I can make things catch on fire and explode... and I look like I can do that. You don't... look like a forest wolf. No offense."
Shinrin shook her head. "Oh, none taken." She glanced down, knowing in her head that Kaige must have been wondering why she wasn't telling the whole truth about her future sight and her abilities to read the stars. But having just met this girl, she wasn't sure she wanted her to know about that. She didn't want her trying to force her into looking into the future for her. It didn't work that way. Besides, except for the time she used it to find out if Kaige was still alive, she wouldn't use it. She hated that power. It was always a curse.
Karin folded her arms and smirked, looking at Kaige. "So you make your girlfriend sleep on a pile of leaves, hm?" Salena's face instantly took shock, and she shook her head sadly. "No... no..." She tried to correct her before Kaige could react. "I'm not his..." She bit her lip. She almost didn't want to admit it. "I'm just an... aquaintance." She muttered, looking over at Kaige from the corner of her vision. She didn't seem him as just an aquaintance, but she didn't want to say something she would regret later, and she didn't want to say anything to upset Kaige.
